A bird ( Tringa variabilis), a species of sandpiper, occurring in vast flocks along sandy sea- shores. It is about 8 inches in length from the point of the bill to the extremity of the tail, and its plumage undergoes marked variations in summer and winter, the back passing from black with reddish edges to each feather, to an ashen gray, and the breast from mottled black to pure white. Called also STINT, PURRE, OX- BIRD, etc.
